HELENA, Mont. – October 9, 2019 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) issues this statement from ACS CAN Montana State Lead Ambassador Keri Yoder following the announcement by Governor Steve Bullock yesterday directing the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services to implement emergency administrative rules to temporarily prohibit the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. The emergency rules would take effect October 22, 2019 and expire on February 19, 2020.
“Reducing tobacco use in Montana is a top priority for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and having Governor Bullock champion the issue is very encouraging.
“To effectively reduce the use of tobacco products including e-cigarettes, we should prohibit of use of e-cigarettes everywhere smoking is prohibited, tax all tobacco products including e-cigarettes, and fully fund a prevention program that includes a mass reach education campaign to protect kids from a lifelong addiction to tobacco and helps promote cessation services to those who are trying to quit.
“By restricting the sale of all candy, fruit, mint and menthol flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, tobacco companies will have one less tool to lure new, young users.”
“We look forward to working with the Gov. Bullock and the Legislature to implement proven policies to stop the youth e-cigarette epidemic.”
