TRENTON, NJ – February 28, 2017 –Today Governor Christie delivered his annual budget message. Following the message Governor Christie told American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Vice President of Government Relations Bill Sherman that he agrees that, “Smokers are addicted and they need help.”
Bill Sherman, released the following statement:
“I was thrilled to hear Governor Christie agree that, ‘Smokers are addicted and need help.’ The most effective way for Governor Christie to follow through on this commitment is to work with Senate leadership to pass and enact S862 (Stack/Weinberg) which dedicates 1% of cigarette tax revenue to New Jersey’s Tobacco Control Program (TCP). The TCP provides evidence based support for those trying to quit this deadly addiction and helps others to never start. The New Jersey Assembly unanimously passed the bill on November 21, 2016. New Jersey remains one of only two states in the country to not provide state funds for the TCP.
“We thank Governor Christie for his leadership and look forward to working with him through this budget process.”
