Big Tobacco to Run Ads in Newspapers and on TV Admitting Their Lies

November 16, 2017

Big Tobacco spent decades lying to all Americans about smoking and the effects of cigarettes on their health.

The truth is now coming out.

The American Cancer Society and other plainttiffs won a historic case against the major tobacco companies.

The federal judge said tobacco companies made untruthful statements in the past when marketing their tobacco products to Americans.

As part of the ruling, tobacco companies will begin running ads in newspapers and online starting November 24 and on television stations the week of November 27.

The ads will appear in major daily newspapers around the country, including the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, with full page ads in every Sunday edition of the newspapers through April 2018.

You will also see the ads when you turn on your television. Tobacco companies must buy commercials on major network television stations five times a week during the evening for 52 weeks.

In their ads, big tobacco must admit that:

  • Cigarette companies intentionally designed cigarettes with enough nicotine to create and sustain addiction. It’s not easy to quit.
  • All cigarettes cause cancer, lung disease, heart attacks, and premature death. There is no safe cigarette.
  • When you smoke, the nicotine actually changes the brain – that’s why quitting is so hard.
  • Secondhand smoke kills over 38,000 Americans each year.

Look in your local paper after Thanksgiving or turn on your TV in the weeks to follow to check out the ads or visit our website to view them!
