The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) announces two new members –– alongside newly-elected leadership officers to the Board of Directors, with terms that began on January 1, 2024. The Board provides leadership and guidance for ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, which supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will hear oral arguments in the case of Haller v. Health and Human Services (HHS) and decide whether or not to uphold the U.S. District Court’s ruling preserving the No Surprises Act (NSA), legislation that prohibits patients from receiving surprise bills for unexpected out-of-network costs. 

Today, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network joined 21 groups representing millions of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, to send a letter to the White House supporting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed rules to eliminate the sale of menthol in cigarettes and all flavors in cigars.

The National Institutes of Standards and Technology proposed new guidance late last week that seeks to expand conditions under which federal government agencies can apply march-in rights, a provision of the 1980 Bayh-Doyle Act, to include consideration for pricing of pharmaceutical drugs.   

Tomorrow, the U.S. Senate Health Education Labor and Pension Committee (HELP) is expected to mark up the Screening for Communities to Receive Early and Equitable Needed Services (SCREENS) for Cancer Act, S.1840. This bill would reauthorize the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) through 2028.

Nearly two years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its proposed rules to eliminate menthol in cigarettes and all flavors in cigars, the administration/White House announced today it will further delay release of final rules. Today, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) sent a letter to key Congressional leaders urging them to advance legislation that comprehensively addresses the nation’s ongoing drug shortage crisis ahead of a Senate Finance Committee hearing Tuesday. 

The House Labor, Health and Human Services funding bill is scheduled to be considered by the House Rules Committee today.

The Senate confirmed Dr. Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, as the new director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today.

New data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) found that more than 6.21 million youth reported ever using tobacco products and 2.8 million report current use (past 30 days) of any tobacco product in 2023.
