It’s Time for Vermont Lawmakers to Say No to Flavored Tobacco Sales

Today marks the 48th American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout®, Vermonters Look to End Flavored Tobacco Sales

November 16, 2023

MONTPELIER - November 16, 2023 –Elected officials across the state must do more to support residents of Vermont who want to quit using tobacco products, say cancer patients, survivors, and advocates who are marking the American Cancer Society’s 48th annual Great American Smokeout®, happening today.

“The Great American Smokeout is an important moment for lawmakers to consider what they can do to continue to protect Vermonters from the tobacco industry’s perpetual targeting,” said Mike Rollo, Vermont director of government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society.

“It’s time for members of the House to follow the Senate’s lead and commit to passing S. 18 and ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products in Vermont.”

“Big Tobacco manufactures and markets menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products for a reason – to make these products easier to use and more difficult to quit. We must end the sale of menthol cigarettes and all other flavored tobacco products to help people quit and to protect kids from a lifetime of addiction,” said Rollo.

ACS CAN is joined by dozens of public health, medical, and community organizations as part of the Flavors Hook Kids VT campaign, where additional resources can also be found.
