October 11, 2017

Reno, NV. – October 10, 2017

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Currently, the average risk a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime is about 12 percent. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer. In Nevada, about 2,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year and, unfortunately, nearly 400 Nevada women will die each year from the disease.  Please join the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) for a Roundtable on Breast Cancer October 13, 2017 at Nevada Hopes, 580 W. 5th Street, Reno, from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

A panel discussion at the Roundtable will cover topics such the latest breakthroughs in treatment, survival after breast cancer, how genetics play a role in breast cancer, and new state legislation signed into law that will provide access for low-income Nevadans to get breast cancer screenings.

Nevada is funding breast and cervical screenings for low-income women to the tune of $500,000 over the next two years through the Women’s Health Connection. Nevada was one of only two states in the country that has shown up “black” in ACS CAN’s annual How Do You Measure Up? report—meaning it had about the lowest level of breast and cervical cancer screening funding in the nation.

“Through passage of Assembly Bill 388, lawmakers recognized there was more Nevada could be doing to fight breast cancer to increase chances of survival when detected,” ACS CAN Nevada Government Relations Director Tom McCoy. “The screenings save lives and health care costs by catching breast and cervical cancer in its early stages when it can be more successfully treated.”

The Nevada Roundtable on Breast Cancer is open to the public, but registration is required.  Go to https://goo.gl/KkNvZ7.
