Mina's Story

January 26, 2017

Mina had a plan.

The ambitious 25-year old had just finished graduate school and was preparing to enter the Peace Corps.

But, she began having pain in her knee, and just three weeks after graduation, Mina was diagnosed with bone cancer.

Prior to her diagnosis, Mina’s parents heard about a provision in the Affordable Care Act that allowed them to add Mina to their health insurance through age 26. And they did it.

It was a move that perhaps saved Mina’s life and prevented her parents from going bankrupt paying for her treatment.

This is not just Mina’s story. Millions of Americans - including cancer patients and survivors - rely on patient protections like this one that are provided in the Affordable Care Act.

Of course, Mina’s story isn’t over yet. As a proud cancer survivor, she’s now considered to have a “pre-existing condition.” Without the current health care law, it would be nearly impossible for her to get health insurance on her own - all because she had the audacity to survive and thrive.

As you know, Congress is considering repealing the current law.
