D.C. Council passes the tobacco tax to save lives

On May 29th, D.C. Council passed the $2 per pack cigarette tax!  Some of the revenue will be used for smoking cessation programs and to implement raising the minimal sales age for tobacco products to 21. Thank you to to the D.C. Council for passing this important legislation.  A special thank you to Councilmember Vincent Gray for being our champion and to all the council members who supported this. Thank you also to all of our volunteers and advocates who took action and to the American Heart Association - Greater Washington Region American Lung Association in the District of Columbia, Breathe DC Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, DC Fiscal Policy Institute and March of Dimes Maryland-National Capital Area Chapter for their partnership on this campaign. #RaiseIt4HealthDC

The Toll of E-cigarettes on Kids in West Virginia

E-cigarette aerosol poses potential risk to people who smoke and people who do not smoke. The most recent Surgeon General’s report concluded that “e-cigarette aerosol is not harmless. It can contain harmful and potentially harmful constituents, including nicotine." 

35.7% of West Virginia, high school students use e-cigarettes. West Virginia can and must do better.

The solution: investing $16.5 million in tobacco prevention and cessation in West Virginia to reduce tobacco use, protect kids, and save lives.
