Advocates pen reminder to Speaker Paul Ryan, published in local paper

May 3, 2017

ACS CAN volunteers David and Kari Reilly shared with us a letter they submitted to the Janesville Gazette newspaper, describing the importance of reliable health insurance for their family. It reads:

"Insurance coverage and patient protections are crucial to our family. David was diagnosed with and treated for cancer 20 years ago. His heart was damaged and now he is listed for heart transplant. We’ve been waiting for three years.

"In February, we had an opportunity to meet Speaker Paul Ryan to talk about the future of the Affordable Care Act.  We explained how our family can’t afford for David to be excluded from health insurance because of a pre-existing condition and how we worry about lifetime or annual caps. It’s critical that we not face any gaps in coverage.

"We don’t know when another family will make the decision to donate their loved one’s heart. We pray for the people who will have to make that decision. And we pray that there will not be any disruption in our eligibility because of a decision in Washington DC.

"Don’t forget us, Speaker Ryan. Don’t forget the reassurances you gave us. Support legislation that will keep us covered."
