ACS CAN Statement on Surgeon General E-Cigarette Report

December 9, 2016

ALBANY, NY – December 8, 2016 –The U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy today released a new report, E-Cigarette Use Among Youth and Young Adults, to address the significant health threat electronic cigarettes pose to our nation’s youth and young adults.

Following is a statement from Julie Hart, director of New York government relations of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

“We applaud Surgeon General Murthy for providing such compelling information to confirm the risks of the use of e-cigarettes and dangerous aerosols.

“As we watch the decline of the use of combustible cigarettes, we have seen the increase in the use of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product among young people. The report shows that e-cigarette use is strongly associated with the use of other tobacco products. The report also states that the use of any tobacco product among youth is unsafe.  This includes e-cigarettes.

“We call on the State Senate and Governor Cuomo to show leadership to protect all New Yorkers, especially our young people, from the scientifically proven dangers of e-cigarettes. We thank the State Assembly for the action they have taken. The time is now to include e-cigarettes in New York State’s clean indoor air act.”
