The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, will hold its Cleveland public policy conference in August of 2017.  The conference will provide a forum for leaders in business, advocacy, academia, and healthcare IT to examine how technology is improving diagnosis and treatment options for cancer patients and others with chronic illness.

ACS CAN is the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization working every day to make cancer issues a national priority.  ACS CAN unites and empowers cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and their loved ones, giving them the training and tools they need to be heard.  ACS CAN’s public policy priorities focus on actions that elected leaders at all levels of government can take to save lives and accelerate progress in the fight against cancer.

Focus of the Conference:

Since passage of the HITECH Act in 2010, America’s health care system has become an increasingly digital, data-driven enterprise. The influx of electronic health records and other technologies is rapidly changing the fight against cancer.  This forum will bring together leading experts in the field to examine the current impact of technologies on cancer research, diagnosis and treatment; discuss advancements and barriers to new technological innovations, and highlight the practical challenges of technology-driven care.

Specifically, this policy forum will focus on:

  • The Difficulty for patients in accessing their data
    • Patient activation in accessing personal medical records electronically; Guidance and navigation through medical record access
    • Assessment of patient readiness to engage technology in their healthcare; Technology literacy assessment
    • Innovative data sharing methods to further research and enhance outcomes
  • Key policy barriers around the development and adoption of technologies across the care continuum and potential solutions needed to overcome them; and,

The event will also offer attendees a unique opportunity to see first-hand live interactive demonstrations of some of the technologies that are transforming the fight against cancer.
