during October we delivered breast and cervical cancer program petitions to Senator Manchin’s office wrapped with a huge pink bow. His staff was very impressed and mentioned they had never received petitions in such a beautiful creative way. I think we also need to THANK those Senators and Reps who support our issues. We are writing a thank you letter to Senator Rockefeller is always supportive. We will be delivering the thank you the same way as we did the petitions with a huge pink bow! It is just as important to remember to say “thank you” to those Senators who continue to support us as it is to encourgage others to get on board.

We have eight MSABC events remaining in target states before the end of the month. We are going to blow up the “Power of the Purse” 888-NOW-I-CAN flyer and/or create a “Tweet This…” sign with a message for participants to tweet, or post to Facebook something like “Congress is using it’s POWER OF THE PURSE by setting its budget priorities for the next DECADE! Call Senator ________ to ask him to make breast cancer funding a priority. Call 888-NOW-I-CAN and together we can put the POWER behind fighting cancer!” Or, “Senator __________ is helping to set the nation’s priorities for the next DECADE! Call 888-NOW-I-CAN to make sure that fighting breast cancer is a national priority.”

In the Mid-South, we are planning five BCCEDP/10 millionth screening news conferences that target five Senators who touch the appropriations process. At the event we have planned outside of Lexington, we will have two clients of the BCCEDP program share their experiences, as well as the director of the Clark County Health Department, the director of the Lexington/Fayette Health Department, and then an advocate or GRD to deliver the ACS CAN message. We will fill the room with breast cancer survivors, as well as the members of the Clark County Fire Department who are all sporting pink shirts through October in honor of BCAM. Finally, we have invited McConnell’s staff to the event.

We have similar events in the works in Chattanooga and Knoxville, TN; Tuscaloosa or Birmingham, AL; and Hot Springs, Ark.

In our states where we’re not planning events, we will be pitching stories about BCCEDP clients and/or working to have published the op/eds sent from the ACS CAN Media Advocacy Team.
