The Fight Back Express rolled south down the Atlantic Coast of Florida on Day Two, paying a visit to the most hallowed grounds in stock car racing...the Daytona International Speedway. In the Courtyard of Flags, several hundred paid homage; not to the track that made legends of drivers like Earnhardt and Petty, but to those in a race of another type - represented today by purple shirts donning the words "Cancer Survivor." They were not disappointed.
The large crowd in attendance was treated to a powerful program highlighted by cancer survivors Cindy Winter and Sally Sebastyn, who empowered us all with messages of hope and perseverance in the fight against cancer. State Representatives Dorothy Hukill and Pat Patterson both signed the bus, and joined Daytona Beach Mayor Glenn Ritchie, Volusia County Council Chair Frank Bruno and a slew of other elected officials in proclaiming June 22nd "ACS CAN Fight Back Express Day."
Relay For Life volunteers served up fresh fare off the grill, and young and old alike were entertained by a steady stream of talented musicians and one ornery clown named "Trouble," who was a big hit with all. Kudos to the Yordons, who worked tirelessly to ensure the day went off without a hitch.
During the course of the day's events, one couldn't help but notice the occasional roar of a high-powered engine coming from the track. As you looked around and saw the bus being signed, petitions being filled out, and new ACS CAN members being recruited into our network - the words of one of our guest speakers rang ever so true. Through ACS CAN, each of us is doing our part to "accelerate" the pace to a cure. By working together, we will get to the checkered flag faster.
