Prevention - Tobacco Control

Comprehensive Clean Indoor Air – Close the loopholes in VT’s Smoke Free Workplace Law:   Vermont is now 100% Smoke Free with the passage of bill S.7 into law, which was sponsored by Senator Mullin of Rutland.  The legislation closes the remaining loophole in the Smoke Free Workplace Act (18 V.S.A. § 1421 - 1428) of 1987 making all workplaces smoke free.

Tobacco Control Funding

The Tobacco Control Program was slated to receive a $1.9 million budget cut, we successfully advocating for a transfer of funds from the tobacco trust fund to the Tobacco Control Program ($1.5 million) in the companion budget bill.  The Tobacco Control Program was only cut by $400,000.

Tobacco taxes
A tobacco tax increase of $.25 per pack will take effect on July 1, 2009, and an increase of 41% to 92% for other tobacco products (OTP). Language was also included to make sure new lighter weight tobacco products (i.e. snus) are taxed appropriately.
