Statement on Passage by State Assembly of New York State E-Cigarette Legislation

ALBANY, NY – June 18, 2015 – The New York State Assembly has passed legislation (A.5955-B, Rosenthal) that if also passed by the State Senate and signed into law by Governor Cuomo will restrict the use of e-cigarettes in public places where combustible cigarettes cannot be used. Bill Sherman, vice president of government relations of the Eastern Division of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) released the following statement:

“On behalf of the 100,000 cancer advocates across our state ACS CAN applauds the New York State Assembly for passing this public health legislation. The time for the Senate to act is now, to protect the health of our children and our hospitality workers. They should not have to wait any longer to breathe clean air. If enacted, this legislation will protect New Yorkers from second hand exposure to nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals found in these products. It will also help ensure that the public health benefits of smoke-free laws are not undermined.

“We thank Speaker Carl Heastie, bill sponsor, Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, and Assembly Health Chair Richard Gottfried for their work on and support of this bill.  We again urge the New York State Senate to also pass this legislation (S.2202-B, Hannon), and for Governor Cuomo to sign it into law to help protect the health of all New Yorkers.”
