Complete Streets In April we joined AARP in celebrating Complete Streets Week across the state. Complete Streets aims to make New York walkable for all generations, and is a component in the fight against cancer, as obesity, poor nutrition and physical inactivity are second only to tobacco as risk factors for cancer. News conferences were held from Long Island to Buffalo, and ACS staff spoke at many of them. Complete Streets legislation currently pending in the State Senate would require new road construction to take into account all users, including cars, bikes and pedestrians. Below is our memo in support of the bill. Memorandum of Support S5711A (Dilan) The American Cancer Society supports enactment of S5711A (Complete Streets) because it will aid in providing safe, enjoyable, and accessible environments for physical activity in communities throughout New York State. This is not simply a matter of recreation, but a matter of life and death. · Obesity, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity are second only to tobacco as major risk factors for cancer. Approximately one-third of the more than 500,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. this year can be attributed to poor diet and physical inactivity. In New York, that amounts to more than 11,000 deaths a year. · Overweight and obesity is clearly associated with an increased risk for developing many cancers, including cancers of the breast, colon, kidney, and endometrium. · The American Cancer Society recommends adults engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on 5 or more days a week and children should engage in at least 60 minutes. · People should be able to get around their communities without always having to get in a car – running, walking, biking, and rollerblading are all fun and healthy means of transportation. · Getting basic physical exercise should not be hazardous to citizens young and old. Many Americans would like to bicycle and walk more, and drive less. However, in many areas there is a lack of infrastructure in place to accommodate safe travel. · The American Cancer Society supports a range of evidenced-based cancer prevention strategies that promote healthy living, including Complete Streets. This legislation will promote public, private and community organizations working together to improve access to a healthier environment for New Yorkers. For further information: |
