Oscoda County Supports Smokefree Regulation - June 30, 2009
On June 23, Oscoda County Commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the smokefree regulation that was passed by the District Health Department #2 Board of Health.
District Health Department #2 encompasses Alcona, Iosco, Ogemaw and Oscoda counties. Because District Health Department #2 is a multi-county health department, the regulation requires approval by the boards of commissioners in each of the four counties before it could go into effect. Oscoda County is the 3rd county to approve the smokefree air regulation joining Iosco County and Alcona County. Ogemaw County is scheduling the final vote for this summer. Once the regulation passes the Ogemaw County Commission, it will go into effect within 90 days. The regulation covers all public and private worksites with the exception of bars and restaurants. In Michigan, bars and restaurants can only be regulated by state law. Currently, 21 counties and 4 cities have approved similar smokefree regulations in Michigan covering almost 50% of the population.
