Baltimore County Passes Youth Tobacco Bill

On December 21, 2009, the Baltimore county Council passed Council Bill 92-09, which will allow enforcement for underage tobacco sales. It will require merchants to require identification of persons purchasing tobacco products if they appear to be under 26 years of age.

This is a HUGE success and is a credit to the Coalition members, the County Executive and his staff, the County Council and our Health Officer, Dr. Branch. It took a coordinated effort among all of the parties to make this bill come this bill happen and PASS!

This legislation will enable the County to educate merchants; educate youth; and if necessary, provide civil penalties for sales without showing identification. The ultimate public health goal is to reduce and, over time, eliminate tobacco use with all of the associated cost savings (human and financial).  This is a wonderful way to start the New Year!

Thank you to Arden  Mueller-Herzberger (CD-2) for attending and submitting written testimony.
