New Laws Enacted
The following new laws were passed by our legislature this 2009. Together they will have a significant impact in lowering both the cancer rate and the number of cancer deaths in Hawaii. This is another big step in meeting our 2015 Challenge goals.

RELATING TO REPORTS ON THE HAWAI‘I CANCER RESEARCH SPECIAL FUND Requires the University of Hawai‘i to provide semi-annual reports to the Legislature on the status of the Hawai‘i Cancer Research Special Fund. (Funds to be use to build our new cancer research center).
ACT 030 SB528 SD1 Signed: April 30, 2009
RELATING TO TOBACCO Makes permanent the law that mandates that businesses engaged in the retail sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products obtain a retail tobacco permit from the State Tax Department.
ACT 056 HB1175 HD3 SD2 CD1 Signed: May 7, 2009
RELATING TO TAXATION (Cigarette Tax Increase) Increases the per-cigarette tax to 13 cents beginning July 1, 2009, 14 cents beginning July 1, 2010, and 15 cents beginning on July 1, 2011.

RELATING TO TAX ON TOBACCO PRODUCTS OTHER THAN CIGARETTES Increases the tax on all tobacco products other than cigarettes from 40% of the wholesale price to 70% of the wholesale price. RELATING TO INSURANCE (Health Insurance Oral Chemotherapy) Requires health insurance providers to provide health insurance coverage for all chemotherapy treatment, including orally administered chemotherapy, at the same co-payment percentage or relative coinsurance amount as is applied to intravenously administered chemotherapy.
