Big Budget Wins in Tallahassee - 4-27-10

Great news from the Capitol in Tallahassee...just a short while ago a deal was reached on a state budget for FY 2010-11, including substantial funding for the American Cancer Society, Florida Division's top priorities, research and tobacco prevention.

The budget conference committee report, expected to pass in a formal vote this Friday, includes $22.2 million for the King Biomedical Research Program and $20 million for the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program. Additional allocations are made to the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center ($10.5 million), the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute ($10 million), and the University of Shands Cancer Hospital ($9.5 million).

The Comprehensive Statewide Tobacco Prevention and Education Program is set to receive an appropriation of $61.3 million, with categorical allocations largely in line with the recommendations of the American Cancer Society and its partners in the tobacco control community.

Should both the House and Senate adopt the budget as expected later this week, it will then go to the Governor for his action.

Thanks are in order for our great volunteers across the state who have worked tireless to help secure these victories for our mission!
