2010 Legislative Session Begins
Yesterday marked the start of the Florida Legislature's annual legislative session in Tallahassee. During the course of the next 60 days, the Florida Division will actively pursue it's top advocacy priority of reauthorizing the state's two peer-reviewed, competitive biomedical research programs, the King Biomedical Research Program and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program. SB 620 by Sen. Don Gaetz (R-Niceville) and HB 861 by Rep. Marti Coley (R-Marianna) would renew these programs, employing $50 million annually from the new tobacco surcharge proceeds.
As always, our extensive grassroots network of volunteer advocates will be called upon to help advance a critical mission opportunity for the Society. Volunteers can expect to see a number of updates and alerts over the next two months.
