Celebrate With Action

Ten years ago, the American Cancer Society decided cancer patients, survivors and caregivers needed a stronger voice with our lawmakers to: increase funding for cancer research, fight for smokefree communities, protect our children from the harms of tobacco use and to ensure all Americans have the care they need to prevent and fight cancer. In September 2001, the Society created the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN); a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN works to encourage lawmakers and candidates to support laws and policies that will make cancer a top national priority.
Since then, ACS CAN has been successful in advocating for: doubling of cancer research, smokefree communities in 35 states plus the District of Columbia, FDA regulation over tobacco products to ensure the industry doesn’t market to our youth, and health care protections all Americans need to prevent and fight cancer.
In September 2011, we will launch our ten year celebration with grassroots actions across the country. ACS CAN will celebrate our 10th anniversary by asking our volunteers, staff and the general public to take action. Our Celebrate with Action legislative campaign will be focused on urging Congress to double cancer research funding once again. In the past few years, research has not kept up with medical inflation, which means that current research that is on the cusp of breakthroughs will be left unseen and undiscovered. The week before our ACS CAN leadership volunteers will be on Capitol Hill lobbying their US Representatives and Senators, our grassroots movement will be holding events back home to mobilize, inform and engage hundreds of thousands of people who care about fighting back against cancer. More research means more lives saved and that will be the theme of the events held in communities throughout the country.
Double the Members. Double the Research. Double the Hope.
